Fado is traditional folk music popular in Portugal, especially Lisbon. It includes instruments such as guitars and mandolins with one Fadista singing often dark poetic lyrics. It originated in Portugal and can be traced back to the early 1800's, but appeared in Lisbon after 1830. The word "fado" and the english work "fate" both come from the latin word fatum. It is also part of UNESCO's intangible cultural Heritage. There are two types of Fado. One found in Lisbon. A common characteristic of this on is to cough loudly after the performance. THe other in found in Coimbra. Clapping your hands is practiced after a performance. The Lisbon one is most common. Today, Fado is practiced in places such as restaurants where people can enjoy the performance while enjoying their food.
I find Fado an interesting part of Turkish culture, not only because of the actual performance, but its uses. I like how they managed to incorporate a part of traditional culture into the modern world. Practices like this are often lost as people lose their roots as they become busy in a modern world. By performing it in restaurants, you give people the opportunity to enjoy their traditional musical culture easily in their lives.
