Burkina Faso has seen many large-scale protests this month over high living costs and the controversial creation of a new senate. The new senate is being created to allow the current president Blaise Compaore of 26 years to remain president despite current laws that restrict him from remaining in power. This will violate the wishes of many voters. However, there are still uncertainties. Complaore has not stated whether he will try to stay in power or step down. The opposition have appeared to unite around its rejection of any plans to alter the presidential term limit. Still, President Compaore has strong support, and if he decides to run again, his political party will remain a strong force. The big question is that if he wins the election, will the opposition even allow him to be president. There will also be regional consequences to this. A period of instability in Burkina Faso could cause immigration to neighboring countries, which could prove to be politically toxic.
I feel that allowing Compaore to remain president would be a bad idea. It is important for Burkina Faso to stick by its laws. If you allow a president to remain president for one more term, that can easily turn to dictatorship. Eventually, he will become too powerful. I believe that the opposition needs to stay strong because in the end, it will be them who get the final say. They can decide whether or not to pass the law, and even if he can become president. They have the right idea in their mind and need to stay by it. It also seems like even though people are protesting, they don't really know what they want. I think the best decision can be made by the government if they do what they think will be best for the countries people.
This article ties into political life in Burkina Faso because it is all about politics and government. The article is about creating a new senate to benefit the current president. It is leading to protests over politics and an unhappy population. This article is important to politics in the country because it will determines the countries future. It could affect who become in control and that can change the whole country whether it be for the better, or the worse.
